I took the kids to the grocery store last week. We practically live there now that we eat healthy. Normally, they go to the little “day care” that is in-store. They love it there and it helps me get my grocery shopping done in peace. Of course, that day, it was closed for some reason. They had to come with me. No big deal, right?
They were actually well-behaved throughout the store. We get to the check out and they see the candy at the register. Delaney is out of the cart helping load groceries onto the belt. Cooper is in the front of the cart. They both ask for candy. I told them no. Delaney kept emptying the cart, but Cooper kept begging for candy.
I told them we would buy Papou (my dad) his favorite candy bar and drop it off to him while he was at work. They were very excited by that. I saw Cooper reach for candy but once again told him no. He put it back and I turned to pay. ROOKIE!
As we are walking out, Cooper gets the BIGGEST smile ever on his face. He looks up at me and says in a sing song-y voice: “I gooooot candyyyyyyy.” I replied no, we did not.
He is still smiling and can barely contain his excitement as he says it again. I again said “No we did not.”
He says we did and proceeds to tell me he is hiding it. All in that lovely sing song-y voice. I instantly panic inside. I ask where this said candy is?
“I’m hiiiiidingggggg ittttttt.” Almost at the car, I pull him forward and sure enough, there is a bag of M&M’s behind his back! I almost died. I went right into lecture mode. That’s not nice, not right, illegal, we can go to jail, yadda yadda yadda. I never stole ANYTHING in my life. Not even on a dare. I am a by-the-rules kind of girl. This is MY son?
I turn the cart around and we go back inside. I am now 50 shades of red as I approach the cashier and explain what happened. She was very nice, assured me it was okay and thanked me for my honesty.
We walk back to the car, as I explain the whole way about why stealing is wrong. I know they are only three, but they have to at least understand it is wrong.
Delaney chimes in: “Yeah, Cooper, if you steal, the police will come take you away. They have car seats so they can take you.” Huh?
And what does Sticky Fingers say? “I like stealing!” with a wicked smile.
Great.
Hilarious!!!!! That would have been a great video for You Tube!!!
It would. That face when he told me…priceless.
I like stealing!! Oh boy mom have fun!
I know, right? I used to think he was my sweet angelic one.
Oh this is great! I would be so embarrassed too! However not as embarrassed as if the detectors went off at the door when we were exiting! With all the crazy parents out there, try explaining to the cops that the kid did that all on his/her own with no teaching from Mommy!!! I bet you’ll be doing all but cavity search now before leaving stores?
Olga – now he is going in the child care EVERY time!!!
Oh what a day! Mine have five finger palmed things before and what was worse was that I didn’t realize they had done it until they were eating it and I asked them where they got it.
Love your blog!
Thank you so much! I am lucky it wasn’t torn open and half eaten, I guess!
Kids do stuff like that all the time! Take it from a former grocery store cashier, it happens a lot, and it really is no big deal.
When he was three, we were in the mall at a shoe store buying him a new pair of shoes. Once both of the sneakers were one, he bolted right out of the door and into the rest of the mall! He was so fast, and there I am chasing after him. When a dragged him back to the store I was so embarrassed. “I didn’t teach him to do that!” I blurted to the employee. We got the shoes.
New follower! I found you from the Bloggy Moms hop
Nicole – don’t you love that no matter what you say, you feel like the store employees think you are lying? Especially when they are young and have no kids!
Wait, I couldn’t get past your grocery store that has a little day care in it. WHAT?????? Found you at finding the funny.
hahaha! Yes, we have a little child care center you can use for FREE while you shop! My kids love it & so do I!! Thanks for checking out my blog!

I love that he was sing singing his confession/bragging rights! Absolutely hilarious(and mortifying. for you.)
I know, right? We went there today and the darn day care was closed for lunch. I was watching him like a hawk. He had a belly ache while we were there; clearly that is the best time to take him.
